What are some good open source implementations for IEEE 802.11 other than Linux?

I have been exploring the source code for Linux wireless subsystem: mac80211, cfg80211, and wpa_supplicant. With ath9k_htc drivers… Are there other implementations for IEEE 802.11 which are open sourced? I have no exposure to Unix or *BSDs (whatever they are), but I think now is the time to look into them. no wlan0 (wlp1s0) visible when ath9k module is enabled

My wifi card appears to work incorrectly. All modules for ath9k are enabled, i can see wifi adapter in lspci but cannot see any wifi in ifconfig Do you have any idea why?
