Is there a way to both use the software I need, and be able to use Ubuntu upgraders instead of clean installing every LTS version?

Like it says on the tin. I’ve used Ubuntu for around five years now, and every upgrade has been a tribulation. Running do-release-upgrade results in a partial upgrade, failed upgrade, or message that “third party” repositories will be disabled.
