Is immediate lockdown always better than a slightly delayed one when handling unstoppable epidemic?

Is there an epidemiologic, mathematical or any other type of argument for stopping exponential growth as soon as it starts?

Are there any cases when introducing intentional reaction delay would be valid, for example if intended to saturate hospitals early to get the most out of them?
