Greater than prompt after invalid command problem

I am using the MariaDB shell and have an issue with a greater than prompt after I enter an invalid command. At the moment all I can do is to quit the shell and start again which is very time consuming.

I have tried entering a semicolon (;), and entering backslash q (\q;). Google does not seem to have any relevant information on the prompts.

Here is an image

Does anyone know a command that can get me back to the regular database prompt so I can continue working without restarting?
