Can Cu2+ with 9 d electrons interact with a pi donor ligand?

Since copper has 1 unpaired electron in its 3d shell , how can it actually accept a lone pair? Does it mean the lone pair from any orbitals of pi symmetry interact with the t2g orbitals and the MOs contain all the electrons whatever? Sorry if this is a basic question I think I’ve gotten myself in a muddle
