What happens when you burn salt in paraffin

My 9 year-old son and I tried to do some extremely amateur flame testing… We lit a paraffin burner [a little tin of paraffin jelly that came with a marshmallow ‘smores’ kit!] and sprinkled on about a teaspoon of salt. We got a brief yellow flame (as expected), which dimmed to blue. Then we simply […]

Polar vs. ionic bond strength – can we put a ball-park number on it?

It will depend on the context of course, but ball-park? Let’s say, in terms of charge, if a Na+ ion has by definition a charge of +1, what is the partial positive charge on a water molecule? A 10th, 100th, 1000th of that? From there we could play around with electrostatic forces etc. Anyone? Terence

Will MSCoreFonts displaying styles with foreign characters on fc-list affect the way the font works?

I recently installed the MS Core Fonts 2 on my Linux server so I can use the MS style TTF for my documents, but when I run the fc-list command, there are several items that stand out as odd. Some of the fonts are showing non-English characters as their style designation. Example 1: /usr/share/fonts/msttcore/timesbd.ttf: Times […]

WideVine in chromium-beta ppa not working

After Updating to Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon (From 19.3) I have found that Chromium is a dummy package and Chromium is no longer available as an apt. I added the chromium-beta ppa (https://launchpad.net/~saiarcot895/+archive/ubuntu/chromium-beta) and saw that WideVine was enabled (yay!) I got the package and downloaded the Chrome 64-bit deb and extracted the contents. Then […]

Why are abstract methods abstract?

For something to be abstract means to hide data. I don’t understand how abstract methods hide any data from the user. An argument can be made that abstract methods require no implementation but in the grand scheme of a class hierarchy that does not hide anything from the user. Abstract methods seem to just force […]

Why does joining an array with `printf` give different results in the terminal vs a script?

I was trying to write a script which involved printing an array with a delimiter. Unfortunately, the printf command that worked typing into the command line did not work when run as a script. It also seems that bash and zsh handle things differently. This gives the intended output, it works if I just paste […]

/** * * @param {?} date */ function diffDays (date){ var utcThis = Date.UTC(this.getFullYear(), this.getMonth(), this.getDate(), this.getHours(), this.getMinutes(), this.getSeconds(), this.getMilliseconds()); var utcOther = Date.UTC(date.getFullYear(), date.getMonth(), date.getDate(), date.getHours(), date.getMinutes(), date.getSeconds(), date.getMilliseconds()); return (utcThis – utcOther) / 86400000; }; I couldn’t find any documentation about built-in Date object in jsdoc docs. What is the recommended way of […]
